Why People Keep Running
A seemingly simple question from Koushik— "Why do people keep running?" Coach Pramod answered it as simple as possible: "It's an individual choice. You need to figure out why you run on your own?"
But the question didn’t stop there—it continued running in my head.
I had my reasons. Or at least, I thought I did. But I wanted to know what others thought.
And just like that, the chase for answers began…
To capture the impact of time—the fourth dimension—I reframed the question:
📍 Why did you start running?
📍 Why are you running now?
I reached out to nearly 100 runners—some new, some seasoned, some chasing goals, some chasing something within. That’s when I realized: I have over 25 runner contacts saved on my phone. A surprise even to me. The past year has unknowingly made me part of the running community.
And then came another surprise (or maybe not)—runners don’t just run, they love talking about running. 😂 Any doubts? 🧐 Join us for a post-run coffee, and you’ll see for yourself! In just five hours, I had over 50 responses.
When I dived into the answers, I found something bigger than expected.
Do people run towards something? Or away from something?Do they run because they love it? Or because they don’t know how to stop?
Did it answer the original question— why do people keep running?Maybe. Maybe not. As coach says "Running is personal". What came out of analysis and reflection is "The why evolves and the how deepens with time"
Some started for fitness, but stayed for peace. Some began for weight loss, but found clarity. Some ran to challenge themselves, but discovered companionship.
Some started running to move—now, they run to find stillness.
New question that arises is do we even need a reason to run?
"Murakami" says running he runs to acquire the void and "Forrest Gump" says he ran because… he just did!!
And here I am, still running. Still questioning. Still watching the waves the different perspectives created.
Do the waves ever ask why they keep coming back to the shore? 🌊
